Closing of head heat-exchanger four times faster with Simultorc

The customer is looking for a new method to open and close the head of a heat exchanger by a more faster and safer way.

Introduction

Refinery, heat exchanger. The customer is looking for a new method to open and close the head of a heat exchanger by a more faster and safer way. They do this now with two men in 6 hours (total 12 hours). There is also a safety issue, the chance of getting an injury due to finger entrapment between the hydraulic / back-up wrench is very high.

Problem

Labor intensive, total 12-man hours to close the heat exchanger. The damage around the bolt holes results in larger differences in bolt force (spreading). Risk of finger entrapment between the hydraulic torque wrench and the back-up wrench. By working with a reaction arm, there is a misalignment of the stud bolts, resulting in loss of bolt force.

Solution

HYTORC has ensured that the customer can do this job with 2 men in 1.5 hours, by offering the Simultorc method. With this method you use 4 tools while allows you to fix 1/4 of the studs at 50%, everything at 100% and 100% inspection round. This saves the customer 9 working hours. To eliminatie all pinching hazards we advised the customer to use HYTORC Washers and Back-Up Washers as a replacement for reaction arms and back-up wrenches. In this way we don’t have to think about skew of the stud bolts anymore, which resulted in loss of bolt force. The chance of damage on the surface around the bolt holes is reduced.

Summary

  • Application: Head, heat-exchanger
  • Number of bolts: 52
  • Bolt size: 1 1/8” x 20”
  • Bolt quality: B7
  • Required torque: 764 Nm
  • Lubrication: Molykote P37

Old situation

  • Work time: 2 x 6 hours (12 hours)
  • Safety hazards: Injury due to finger entrapment
  • Used tools: 1x hydraulic torque wrench, back-up wrench, electric pump system
  • Damaged flange surface

New situation

  • Work time: 2 x 1,5 hours (3 hours)
  • Safety hazards: Injury due to finger entrapment excluded
  • Used tools: 4x hydraulic torque wrench (Stealth-2), HYTORC Washer, back-up washer, fixation nuts and electric pump system

Conclusion

• Saving 9 working hours per job
• Injury due to finger entrapment excluded
• Less chance of damaging the surface on the flange.
• Accurate and equivalent bolt tension due to excluding misalignment:
o Smaller chance of leakage due to more accurate bolt tension
o Reduction diffuse leakage loss
