Pump unit
A pump unit forms the beating heart of every hydraulic system. Without a reliable hydraulic pump, even the most advanced hydraulic torque wrench is nothing more than idle steel. In industrial applications where precision, safety, and continuity are critical, the quality (correct pressure) of the pump unit directly determines the result of the bolted connection.
A hydraulic pump converts energy into controlled oil pressure. That pressure is then used to apply exactly the right force to a bolt. The principle is simple, but its execution requires expertise. Pressure, flow, and stability must be perfectly aligned. Too little flow leads to irregular operation, while too much pressure creates risks for both the tool and the operator. That is why a pump unit is never a standalone product, but always part of a complete solution.
Depending on the working environment, either an electric hydraulic pump or a pneumatic pump is selected. Electric pumps are efficient, powerful, and suitable for prolonged use in production and maintenance environments. They also offer precise pressure control and, in modern variants, even automatic pressure regulation and data logging. This reduces the risk of operator error and increases the repeatability of the bolted connection.
In environments where electricity is not permitted, such as ATEX zones, a pneumatic pump provides a solution. It operates entirely on compressed air and is therefore (when certified) explosion-proof. At the same time, this type of pump unit requires additional attention to air quality, flow rate, and energy consumption. Compressed air is reliable, but costly. An incorrect choice of pump or connection will immediately lead to performance loss or inaccuracy.
What is often underestimated is that the pump unit is also a safety component. High pressures involve risks, such as leaks that can lead to hydraulic injection under the skin if the proper PPE is not used. That is why every hydraulic pump should be accompanied by clear instructions, correct settings, and periodic inspections. A properly configured pump unit not only prevents damage, but also avoids rework and downtime.
